A hilarious moment when a tourist filming a video about “trying overly hard to not be annoying” towards locals ends up doing just that has left users on TikTok in stitches.
The ironic moment when the woman “spilled a ton of water on the people on the balcony” below her was captured in a video posted by KP Parker (@kpifthatscool), who is a comedian based in New York, she told Newsweek.
The poster said she and her sibling were staying at an apartment abroad and recording a video when “just as we begin, the table falls and my glass of water spills on the ground and off the balcony edge.”
The footage shows the poster sitting at a wooden table, with her hand on a glass of water. She looks at the camera and asks her sibling, “Are you filming?” before the table suddenly drops down to the floor, with the glass of water going down with it, as laughter is heard in the background.
She noted: “I was planning on recording a video about how I feel so annoying asking locals for anything, or talking loud, or being in the way as a tourist because my mere presence is, I’m sure, annoying.”
In a caption shared with the video, which has received over 366,000 views, the poster said: “heard them [the neighbors below] swearing at us for a long time :)”
The comedian’s apparent paranoia about bothering any locals as a tourist abroad is understandable, as “Western tourists are more likely to engage in unethical behavior on holidays than at home,” according to a study of Chinese and Western tourists in Hong Kong, published in March 2017 in Annals of Tourism Research.
The study noted: “It is argued that tourists are more likely to exhibit unethical and deviant behavior during travel than at home. Tourists are also likely to employ various neutralization tactics to justify such behavior.”
According to the poster of the viral TikTok video, “the table wasn’t wobbly at all, I have no clue why it fell. I feel like I barely touched it.”
The poster said: “The downstairs neighbors on the balcony were definitely annoyed and sighed and scoffed and immediately got out their broom and swept the incoming water off their balcony as my sibling and I ran inside. My mom went out a minute later and tried to say ‘sorry’ but I think they had left, they didn’t respond.”
Users on TikTok were amused by the unexpected funny scene in the viral clip.
Jen Rio said: “The quiet laughing has me cackling,” and K noted: “I’d never be able to leave the room.”
Kera Peterson simply said: “oh the irony,” and @jamie.rediger noted: “oh this is too too good.”
User @oliviastewart716 said: “Life imitates art,” and user209641 noted: “My life for real.”
Some users blamed the table, such as @planetplumstudios who said: “the table has a vendetta against tourists or something.”
Little Miss Feminist said: “I would fight that table,” and quix wrote: “this is not your fault that table had its own plans.”
